it's been 1008 days since I joined Xanga
and no I'm not going premium . . .

why pay for something you can get for free?

which brings me to my reason for posting:

Radiohead's new album, In Rainbows

I heard about this on NPR this afternoon.
Radiohead, one of the very best bands around these days has decided to release their latest album without a record label. In Rainbows is only available through http://www.radiohead.com/
and guess what? they don't have a price on the digital download! you can pay whatever you want. get it for free even . . .
you can also buy a 'discbox' which includes the digital download and as far as I know, 2 CDs and 2 12 inch vinyl records in a very nice case for GBP 40.00
that's 40 pounds which turns out to be 81.77 dead presidents (darn exchange rates :()

traditionally the record labels make the majority of the money from record sales, with the artists getting a percentage. a trend is starting where artists are releasing directly, instead of through a record label. this allows the artists to have greater control over their release. recently Prince released his latest album in a magazine if I recall . . .

In closing I think that the future of music is changing.  Fans will gravitate away from cookie cutter commercial products toward unique and independant works such as what's being done by Radiohead and hopefully more to follow.
